About Good Food Kangaroo Island

Supporting Kangaroo Island Food and Wine Producers.

Kangaroo Island has it all ... One of Australia’s most spectacular and pristine environments – and with superb gourmet food and wine to match.

It’s a natural fit, and for visitors to the island it’s a rare opportunity to taste nature at its best. Local producers have been fiercely protective of the clean, green character of the island and for good reason. Today they produce a stunning array of foods, from high quality dairy products and pure honey to gourmet ice-cream and some of the finest seafood available in Australia.

Kangaroo Island is a relatively large island with a surprising diversity of landscapes / environments. It is South Australia’s premier nature based tourism destination and one of the top four in Australia. As the site of the first European settlement in South Australia, Kangaroo Island also provides historical, cultural and agricultural heritage experiences.

Kangaroo Island has the justifiable image of being safe, clean and healthy environment. Kangaroo Island’s bio-security is protected through strict quarantine laws and a high level of visitor awareness that translates to compliance. The island has been a Ligurian bee sanctuary since 1885, the Ligurian bee has been recognised as South Australian Food Icon.

Research conducted by SA Tourism Commission and Kangaroo Island regularly identifies the food experience as being a critical component to satisfy the tourist experience and has a high strategic importance.

The value added food industry on Kangaroo Island is estimated to be valued at over $13 million, this does not include unbranded farm gate sales (ie: livestock, grain) or retail.

Kangaroo Island has achieved considerable recognition for its’ food producers, in 2006 KI Ligurian Honey (Island Beehive) won the SA Great - SA Regional Small Business Award, SA Great have also recognised KI Spirits, KI Seafood and Fergusson Fisheries. In 2005 Kangaroo Island Ligurian honey (Island Beehive) won the Best Organic Product. In 2007 Vogue Entertainment awarded Kangaroo with top Regional Produce Award and the Island Beehive (honey production, and retail) received the top Regional Tourism Award.

Good Food Kangaroo Island is an industry group formed to encourage and support value adding producers and protect the integrity of the Island’s produce. Regional food groups have been established throughout South Australia and are actively working with producers to establish regional branding and long term relationships with major retailers seeking access to high quality, branded products.
